Demonstration - fight for tuition

Dear student,

As you may be aware, the government recently presented the results of the review into the funding of higher education by Lord Browne. Their response supported a raising of the cap on tuition fees to £9000 per year. As well as this, the results of the comprehensive review advocate cuts in teaching grants of over 75%, with all funding for the arts, humanities and social sciences removed.

We as a Guild are lobbying MPs along with our sister unions in the NUS to ensure that students are not priced out of higher education and that future generation are able to benefit from the opportunities afforded to us.

We are attending a national demonstration in central London next Wednesday 10th November. Coaches are running from the guild at 5.30am and leaving London at 7pm. Tickets are very limited and available from Guild Reception for £10, £5 of which is refundable when you board the coach. The demonstration finishes at 3pm, so there is time to explore the capital!

We’re also aware that many of you have reading weeks next week, so if you cannot get a ticket for one of our coaches, we would encourage those that are able, to join us in London. We will assemble at 11.30 on Horse Guards Avenue for a 12.30 march. The rally venue will be at Millbank outside the Tate Britain from 13.15 to 14.00.

We have coordinated with other unions in the region to ensure that Merseyside students’ voices are heard and have encouraged all activities such as sports to be suspended on this day, with fixtures being deferred. We’d like to officially thank those teams that have rearranged their fixtures with our fellow institutions for their support on this crucial day.

So, there are a few tickets left to attend, join us in London if you can, if not, we would appreciate your support by signing up to support the Demo and what it stands for at www.demo2010.org

Best wishes

Josh Wright, LGoS President 2010-11
